The general type of dental implants used today is the root-form endosseous implants. These are made of titanium. The procedure requires that hole be drilled into the bone and progressively widened to allow fitting of the implant. The implant is similar to a nut of a screw or bolt in which a false tooth is screwed in. This is generally the same across the two types described here. The difference lies in the timing of the procedure. The first procedure is delayed implantation. This requires that the tooth heals for at least 3 months before an implantation attempt is done. This provides a high success rate. However, there is a growing popularity in the immediate placement procedure. This requires that the implant be placed right after tooth extraction. Findings indicate that for single root tooth implantation, the success rate is the same as delayed implantation.
